What I learnt from people who no longer serve me

One of life’s greatest joys is connecting with new people. But what happens when those who were once worth your energy…no longer are?

Take nothing personally

Amongst the biggest things I’ve learnt from those who no longer serve me is that nothing is personal. How someone reacts and handles a situation has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them. Every day we have a choice. Life throws us curveballs and how we deal with them is entirely up to us. Some cling to their egos as if their life depends on it, while others choose to take the dignified route.

No matter which road is selected, the key takeaway is that decisions and reactions are often concocted without you in mind. What you discover is that the ‘why’ is a recipe made up of one’s experience, maturity and ego.

Leave forever at the door

Lesson two, nothing is forever. One of my favourite concepts is that certain people are only ever meant to be temporary. Over the span of our lives, we enter, immerse ourselves and exit through a multitude of chapters. And as life goes on, we acquire new characters.

I find myself abundantly blessed with those around me who are in it for the long haul. Chapter in and chapter out. They come in modest numbers but each shines a light far stronger than the sun over my existence. These are the souls that flow effortlessly with your stream.

Occasionally, amongst the easy breeze of it all, you realise you’ve had a rock or two blocking parts of your flow. You have two choices. Continue to maneuver your stream around the rocks or simply dislodge them.

Our lives aren’t crafted for longevity, rather a profound experience. It just so happens that certain presences shouldn’t go on to the next chapter.

Acknowledge the power of vibrations

As we go through life, you’re (hopefully) growing up as a result of lessons, successes and mistakes. Sometimes stepping into your own forges different frequencies between you and those around you. That’s simply the universe bringing you back to your path. Vigilance and the blessing of incredible people make it clear who doesn’t quite fit the bill for your life anymore.

That’s the thing about frequencies, either you drop to their level or they rise to yours. There are no three ways about it. When push comes to shove, are you really willing to lower yourself just to hold onto a moment of your life that’s coming to its natural end? Probably not.

At the end of the day, life is both a fleeting moment in time and a journey of deep proportions. Don’t waste a single moment of it on those who don’t align with who you are or where you’re going.
